Every fire protection measure in a building is a race against how long the fire has been burning. Detection is the only one that changes the starting time. A system that reports a fire three minutes earlier does more for the outcome than any amount of suppression added afterwards.

Designed to the building, not to a price

Detection is where the temptation to fit the cheapest compliant system is strongest, and where it costs the most. A panel specified without regard to what the building actually does produces either false alarms that get the system ignored, or coverage gaps that make it decorative.

Eagle Fire Control designs to SANS 10139 and to local authority specifications, sizing the system to the risk — a small office suite, a multi-storey commercial block, a warehouse, a hazardous-area plant and a server room are five different problems, not one problem at five prices.

Integration is where detection becomes useful

A detection panel that only sounds a bell has done the smallest part of its job. Ours are integrated so that a confirmed alarm does everything at once — releases access-controlled doors so people can get out, shuts down HVAC so smoke is not distributed through the building, triggers the audio evacuation system, and pressurises stairwells and fire doors to keep escape routes clear.

We install and configure that integration ourselves as part of the detection system, so responsibility for the whole chain sits with one company.

Servicing and false alarms

A detection system is a live installation that drifts — detectors gather dust, batteries age, buildings change. We service and maintain the systems we install and systems installed by others, and we treat repeated false alarms as a fault to be diagnosed rather than a nuisance to be silenced. A system nobody trusts is worse than no system at all.

What is the difference between conventional and addressable fire alarm systems?

A conventional system divides the building into zones and tells you which zone is in alarm. An addressable system identifies the individual device, so the panel reports the specific detector and location. Addressable systems cost more but dramatically reduce the time spent locating a fire, which is why they are standard for larger or multi-storey buildings.

Which standard do fire detection systems have to meet in South Africa?

Can you install detection in hazardous or explosive-risk areas?

Yes. We install intrinsically safe detectors for hazardous areas, along with infrared and ultraviolet flame detection for flammable-liquid and gas risks, and ember detection for conveyor and process applications.

What is aspirating smoke detection and when is it needed?

An aspirating system continuously draws air samples through a pipe network to a highly sensitive detector, rather than waiting for smoke to reach a ceiling-mounted device. It gives the earliest possible warning and is used where the contents are high-value or the consequences of delay are severe — server rooms, data centres and critical process areas.

Do you service fire detection systems installed by other companies?

Yes. We service and maintain existing installations regardless of who originally installed them, including fault-finding on systems suffering repeated false alarms.
